Who Are We?

Doug and Justine Albrecht have been operating Plantation Carriages since 1986 on Kauai. The Albrecht’s enjoy their every moment working with their beautiful horses.  Around the stables the horses always come first. But around the house they have two wonderful children that keep smiles on their faces. Donny who is 13 now is a big help around the stables and is learning to drive. Mandy who is 9 is also an animal lover always wanting to ride or just be around the horses. For the Albrecht’s, operating Plantation Carriages is not a job but simply a way of life. As they say, "living in paradise and just horsin’ around".  It is as good as it gets. They feel that because of their love for what they do, they can bring the best product to their customers every single time.

The following prayer has been around for long time. We did not write this prayer, but it does share a great deal about how we feel all animals should be treated. We also carry this thought to all the people we come in contact with. We hope that by sharing this with you we can make the animal world a better place.

THE DRAFT HORSE'S PRAYER

To thee, my master, I offer my prayer. Always be kind to me. Talk to me, your voice means as much to me as the bit. Curry and brush me, that I may serve you more gladly and learn to love you. Never strike, beat or kick me when I do not know what you want, but give me a chance to understand you. Do not jerk the lines or whip me when the team is pulling uphill. Watch me. If I fail to do your bidding, see if something is not wrong with my harness or my feet. Feed, water and care for me, and when the day's work is done, do not leave me tied for long hours to the hitching rail. Provide me with shelter, clean dry bedding and a stall wide enough for an enjoyable roll to ease my itchy back.

Give me cool, clean water often. I cannot tell you in words when I am sick, so watch me. By my signs you will know my condition. Keep me well shod and examine my teeth when I do not eat. Give me all possible shelter from the hot sun and blanket me, not when I am working, but when I am standing in the cold. Never put a frosty bit in my mouth. First warm it by holding it a moment in your hands.

I pull you and your wagon without a murmur and wait patiently for you long hours of the day and night. Please do not overload me or tie me with my head in an unnatural position. When I am harnessed, check me so I have free use of my head. I pray you be careful my blinders stand well out of my eyes, as with them I am unable to see behind me. Remember, I am ready at your bidding to give my heart to you.

And finally, Oh, Master, when my youthful strength is gone, do not turn me out or sell me to some cruel owner, to be slowly tortured and starved to death. But do thou, my Master, take my life in the kindest way and your God will reward you now and in the Hereafter. This I ask in the name of Jesus, who Himself was born in a stable.
